A special meeting of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen for the Town of Addis was held at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, December 14, 1983 at the Town Hall.
Present: Mayor Bourgeois; Aldermen Carroll; DeBlanc; Fitzgerald; Guidry; LeBlanc.
Absent: None
A bill from Baton Rouge Tree Service to the Water Board for relocating a water line when a new catch basin was installed by the Town, was discussed. Water Board President Tullier had previously asked if the Town would consider paying a part of the labor cost on this job. The bill was discussed by the Finance Committee and on their recommendation, a motion was made by Alderman DeBlanc, seconded by Alderman LeBlanc to pay $400.00 on the Baton Rouge Tree Service bill with the stipulation that this amount not be paid until all roads which were damaged by the Water Board be repaired. The motion carried unanimously.
Police Chief Berthelot recommended that the resignation of Officer Sidney Vaughn be accepted. Acting on this recommendation, a motion was made by Alderman DeBlanc, seconded by Alderman Fitzgerald to accept the resignation of Officer Sidney Vaughn. The motion carried unanimously.
Mayor Bourgeois advised that he spoke with Mr. Crochet about the repair to the refuse hauler. Mr. Crochet advised that there is no warranty in affect on this part and asked that the shaft be returned to him so he can send it back to the factory to see if. it was defective. Attorney Larpenteur advised that he is not in favor of returning the part. More action will be taken on this matter when the repair bill is received.
A motion was made by Alderman Fitzgerald, seconded by Alderman DeBlanc to purchase a tool box for the pickup truck; six torches and six spare wicks at an approximate cost of $250.00. The motion carried unanimously.
A discussion was held on the police department structure. Chief Berthelot advised that he would like to have two auxiliary positions with a maximum pay up to $200.00 and a position (presently filled by Mike Berthelot) at a maximum of $275.00, with a starting pay for auxiliary police of $150.00. He would like to see & the men presently on the force reach these maximum salaries in two years. Alderman DeBlanc suggested that a part, of the raise be given this year and the balance next year. The Mayor suggested that the raises be withheld six months to show that the Council is not satisfied with the auxiliary's performance while the Chief was out of twon. Alderman Fitzgerald suggested that the money for raises be put in the budget and the Council could give the raises when it feels they are warranted.
Alderman Guidry moved that raises be given to the Auxiliary as follows: Mike Waldrop $30.00; Paul Ramagos $30.00; Mike Berthelot $20.00, giving 1/2 now and the balance reviewed in May. Alderman Carroll offered an amendment to Alderman Guidry's motion to state that Officer Mike Berthelot be given a $20.00 raise n9 instead of $10.00. The motion and amendment were seconded by Alderman, DeBlanc and adopted unanimously on a roll call vote.
Chief Berthelot advised that he has spoken with the auxiliary police and there would be no more problems when he is out of town. He also advised that his priority is traffic safety and high visibility in town. Alderman DeBlanc asked that the cars be kept south of the Intracoastal Canal. Chief Berthelot advised that he would do this as much as possible but his department would always back up the Sheriff's office on calls.
A motion was made by Alderman Guidry, seconded by Alderman Carroll to raise the salary of Assistant Chief Harold Berthelot by $100.00, effective January 1, 1984. The motion carried unanimously on a roll call vote.
